Policy & Political-Military Bureau

The Political-Military Bureau is a central agency in Israel's Ministry of Defense and wider defense establishment, responsible for planning and executing strategic defense policy.

The Bureau  provides policy recommendations and guidance in four main areas:

1) Policy recommendations for decision makers regarding major strategic defense challenges facing Israel

2) Policy recommendations, guidance and implementation of foreign relations and cooperation with international counterparts and allies

3) Political dimensions of export controls policy

4) Policy of the defense establishment with regard to arms controls, treaties and regimes

The Political-Military bureau leads strategic meetings between the Minister of Defense, Director General and their global counterparts. In 2017, the Minister had the pleasure of welcoming the American Secretary of Defense, Chairman of the Joint-Chiefs, and Russia's Defense Minister, among others. The bureau works in collaboration with relevant agencies within the Defense Ministry, IDF, Israeli government ministries and the intelligence community.

In 2017, Mr. Zohar Palti was inducted as the bureau's director. Mr. Palti previously served as the Head of the Intelligence Directorate in the Mossad. He also served in a variety of positions in military intelligence, including the position of Deputy Head of the Production Department. Mr. Palti replaced the bureau's founding director Gen. (res) Amos Gilad, who had served in the position since 2003.
